In 2021, while searching for photos of his grandparents, Frenchman Marcus Détrez accidentally discovered a set of photographs taken by his grandfather Lawrence taken during the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. In 2025, he donated these photos to China.
After watching the movie Dead to Rights in China, he pointed out that the Western society knows quite little about this history, as they tend to arrive only after conflicts end, which is too easy. Through persistent advocacy, he hopes people of all nations can remember this dark history and ensure the truth is never forgotten.
As his donated photos identified, Marcus and his team now plan to travel to Japan, the United States, and other countries to continue sharing the historical truth behind these photos. (By Xue Lingqiao)
